Affirmations

Last summer I saw this affirmation, published it on my blog and was thinking about it today on my hike. After reading it again almost eight months later, I still believe in what it says.

“I no longer have patience for certain things, not because I’ve become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time with what displeases me or hurts me. I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me. I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that’s why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And on top of everything I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience.”

Zen On The Trail

I look up the trail and what do I see,

A day full of promise I think you’ll agree.

I hope and I pray for clear lucid thought,

The sun and the stars are all that is sought.

As I walk down the path and my mind starts to wander,

I take a deep breath, my heart growing fonder.

Is it possible? Can it be true?

Should I walk this alone, did I think it all through?

A path of enlightenment, Zen promises abound,

The earth and rocks flutter, a vibe from the ground.

So each step that I take, dust scattering the trail,

No way will I stop, no way will I fail.

I can now see the end, a magnificent view,

My love of the trail, a love that is true.

My Inner Peace

Slivers of sun fall softly through the trees,

Warming your face and the trail with ease.

Walking the earth, the miles go by,

The wind whispers welcome from the blue sun kissed sky.

I walk and I walk, smelling the soft scent of pine,

Invading my spirit and caressing my mind.

As my thoughts start to wander, I don’t travel for speed,

My journey is nowhere, I just have the need.

So as I move on and my thoughts become clearer,

I’m closer to peace, my soul is a mirror.

Transition to Spring

Cold winter nights, fresh snow softly falling,

Thoughts of warmer days with a pack on my back,

Moving silently through the woods, boots kicking up dirt.

Newly released from winters grasp,  each step a promise,

A promise of longer days and peaceful nights that bring

The mesmerizing rush of spring streams and the crack of dead

Winter limbs. As the woods open their arms and embrace each soul

As its own, we long for the simple touch of springs sweet caress.

Hiking The A.T.

I seek fellowship

On the white blazes of life.

Quiet steps blurred

By the shadows of hikers

Marching on the open path,

Seeking answers to

Everything, finding inner

Peace on the worn earth,

Each step a reminder of

A fomer life left behind

Another Sunrise

As you know, I love a good sunrise! So even though I have posted sunrises before, I couldn’t resist taking these pictures this morning on my way to pick up some bagels for breakfast. Of course I left my camera at home so I had to take these with my cell phone.

“This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never dried all at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls.”

-John Muir

“Rest but never quit. Even the sun has a sinking spell each evening. But it always rises the next morning. At sunrise, every soul is born again.”

-Muhammad Ali

“We need to be reminded sometimes that a sunrise last but a few minutes. But its beauty can burn in our hearts eternally.”

-R.A. Salvatore

“The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep.”

-Rumi

“Yet even the brightest of sunrises must come to an end.”

Tranquility

When

I look

Into your

Eyes, what do you

See? a mirrored life

Masking tranquility.

Vanilla scented love keeps

Me close, intoxicating in

Its simplicity, flowing freely,

Marking days, the drumbeat of my

Life a silent echo, filling

The void with snippets of time

That continue to tell

Me that I love you.

Seen from afar,

I forget

That you

Breathe.

Saying Goodbye

The eyes of the dying man closed,

Moist with memories, he struuggles to see,

Blind and held captive by  the past,

He stumbles through the  years

Silently asking for nothing but more time, a second chance

To reclaim what has been misplaced by the ghosts of time.

Darkness envelopes him, a small light in the distance calls out,

Peace.

Year (2)

I look in the mirror on the last day,

Wondering what awaits me tomorrow.

Another year has past, another year older,

Another year of loss, another year bolder,

Why do we wait, for each year to end,

Why do we wait, to be on the mend.

So I look in the mirror on the first day,

Wondering what awaits me tomorrow.

Year

Renewal (3)

Rushing into the house just a few minutes ago after walking our elderly neighbors dogs, my daughter exclaimed, “Dad, quick, you have to get a picture of the sunset.” Walking to the front door, I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of the sunset that I saw before me. Most people think of sunrises as being a period of renewal, but after a morning of snow that turned to a drenching rain that lasted more than seven hours, the sunset today was amazing and a great way to end the day. To me, a period of renewal.
