My Favorite Place

“When you leave a beautiful place, you carry it with you wherever you go.”

-Alexandra Stoddard

Looking across the Hudson River and directly above the bridge is Anthony’s Nose, a favorite hiking destination for many folks in the Hudson Valley and beyond! The Nose is accessible from several starting points, all which offer varying degrees of difficulty.

Why is this my favorite place? For over 20 years, in good times and bad, the Nose has been a place where I could go for peace, quiet and when available, solitude.

“We are beyond words.”

-Rumi

Taken after several days of rain, I was out hiking and when I stopped for water I looked up and saw the most beautiful blue sky with puffy white clouds mixed in. Since all I had seen for days were grey skies, the sense of relief I got when I looked up was remarkable.

Rodgers Book Barn in B & W

“Old books exert a strange fascination for me — their smell, their feel, their history; wondering who might have owned them, how they lived, what they felt.”

-Lauren Willig

At least a couple of times a year we head up to Hillsdale, NY to pay a visit to our favorite used bookstore, Rodgers Book Barn. Even though we have been heading north to look for books old and new for over two decades, searching for something to read in this unique little bookstore never gets old!

Over the years I have taken many picture of the Book Barn, but I can’t remember presenting them in B & W. Here are some of the Book Barn itself with a few of the surrounding property.

The Aftermath

“What good is the warmth of summer without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?”

-John Steinbeck

I took these photos the day after the second nor easter dumped 19.5 inches of the white stuff on us.

It’s Blowing And Snowing!

Call me crazy, but in the middle of our second nor easter in a week, I decided to head outside to take some pictures.  The storm was raging and even though It was dark and I was more than a wee bit cold, I braved the elements to get these pictures!

In the moments when the wind slowed to a dull roar, being outside in the snow was very peaceful. The sound of the snow falling provided me with a sense of peace and some tranquility.

Croton Falls Diverting Dam

With the copious amounts of rain and snow that we have received recently, our reservoirs are full and they have reached their peak and are now overflowing.

Approximately 10 Miles from my house is the Croton Falls Diverting Dam. Only a few times a year are we given the privilege of seeing the reservoirs water cascade over into the spillway.

The Start Of The Best Time Of The Year

”Do you love life? Then do not squander time, for that’s the stuff life is made of.”

-Benjamin Franklin

Tonight marks the beginning of the best time of the year. At 2 am Sunday morning, we move the clocks ahead an hour. For those of us who cherish being outdoors, this means an extra hour of daylight to do what we love to do. While most folks bemoan the loss of an hour of sleep, I see it as an opportunity. An opportunity for adventure!

Instead of coming home every day and climbing on my stationary bike, the extra hour of light means that I’ll be able to head out to Ward Pound Ridge for a hike. If only for a few miles, being outside to witness the change from winter to spring and eventually summer is a much greater gift than you can imagine!!

Happy Hiking to each and every one of you!!!

Before The Game…

I had a little time before my daughters hockey game so I walked around and took these pictures.

Her game was held at the South Kent School in South Kent, CT.

The water was still and that gave me this picture.

A Hike Before The Rain

When I checked the weather this morning, it said a high in the 50’s with rain after 5pm. At the start of the hike it was 46 degrees and mostly sunny. As I made my way through the park, it got cloudier and cloudier, with rain falling on me for the last 25 minutes.

With that said, it was still a beautiful hike for the 24th of February. It could have easily been 20-25 degrees colder with some type of frozen precipitation either falling or on the ground.
