The Shadow of Yesterday and The Promise of Tomorrow

Shadows grow long as the days disappear,

The reversal of time heeds its call.

Cold dark nights are upon us,

Each lovers embrace a stark reminder of what once was.

Passing silently in each others arms,

The warmth of yesterday fades into the glowing embers

And the wispy grey ashes of every lost love and the memories shared.

With time diverted and memories now deferred, the hope of tomorrow

Brings the promise of new life, new love and a warm embrace.

Where Did Fall Go?

It’s the second of November and it doesn’t feel like fall,

An  unlikely wind is upon us, failing to heed the call,

And now the day is over and as nice as it has been,

I like it much, much cooler, to keep me in my zen.

Now some of you that are out there, may enjoy a warmer day,

To get outside while you can to walk and run and play,

But days like this, my dear old friends, I really couldn’t care,

Because I’m the kind of dude, who likes the chilly air.

Weed Orchard & Winery

Fall is officially here in the Hudson Valley of New York! The leaves are turning, temperatures are cooler, a nice breeze is blowing and the sky is blue. What does that mean? Perfect apple picking weather.

We decided to head up to Weed Orchards & Winery, located in Marlboro, NY. An easy 50 minute drive from where I live in Mahopac, it offers everything that you would expect from an orchard. Even the car ride (mostly on highways) provided us with some pretty nice views of the landscape.

Pulling up to the Winery, we parked on a grassy hillside and walked a short distance to where you got the bag you would need to store the apples that you would pick.

After speaking with several friendly people, we headed towards the orchards. Although they offer many different types of apples, we just followed the many signs that sent us in the direction of where we needed to be.

Most of the apples that we picked were either green (the kind my daughter likes), or red, the type the rest of us will eat. We found that the closer to the main road you were ended up not offering as many choices as when you moved up the rows and further away from the crowds. These apples tended to be lower to the ground and didn’t require the extra effort needed when they were higher up in the trees.

One of the more interesting things about this orchard is that it does have things that will keep smaller children occupied. You can pick pumpkins, feed animals and just wander the many acres of dirt roads. If you look carefully at the first picture below, you can see the top of the wooden structure that is in the middle of the corn maze.

Before you leave, I would strongly suggest visiting the bakery, as they had many different types of cakes, cookies, pies, jams and soups that will satisfy just about every taste.

Here are some assorted photos from around the orchard:

The Start of Autumn at the Nose

Since school started back up on August 30th, I haven’t had as much time to go hiking. It’s always a let down, especially since I could go hiking anytime and anywhere I wanted to during the summer months. Although I do ride a stationary bike on the days that I don’t get out, it isn’t quite the same! So, we had today off and I decided to go to…..Anthony’s Nose of course! It is still very early in the fall season so only small spots were beginning to change.

Bear Mt. as seen from the Nose. As you can see, although some of the more Autumn colors are evident but not widespread.

As  the AT turns off onto a woods road, it runs parallel to Camp Smith, a US Army reserve training center. Here are two signs that kept appearing on that particular section of the trail. The “Danger” sign faces the military reservation and the orange “property of” sign is on the other side of the tree facing the trail.

As I have noted before, hiking to Anthony’s Nose is always special, no matter how many times you take to the trail to get to the top. The temperature today was in the low 60’s with no humidity and cloudy skies. It was perfect!!!

Don’t worry, when the Autumn colors are more crisp I’ll get back up there and get some outstanding photos!

Peace.

The Autumn Hiker

A Tanka:

The hiker walks, boots

crunching the autumn leaves that

have fallen, making

each step an enchanted and

blissful journey towards peace.
