The Trail Keeps Calling

“I felt like lying down by the side of the trail and remembering it all. The woods do that to you…”

-Jack Kerouac

Although it wasn’t sunny out, the temperature and humidity today were much lower than on Saturday.  Starting at almost the same time, the improved weather made the hiking much easier on the mind as well as the body. As always, it was a great hike and an awesome way to start the day!

Humidity=Bugs & Sweat

“An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.”
-Henry David Thoreau

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
-Henry David Thoreau

WOW!!!! Today was the most humid day for hiking that I have encountered so far this year. At 5:20 am the temperature was already 66 degrees and the humidity was sky high. The forecast tonight is for thunderstorms so I guess the high humidity just comes with the territory! As a matter of fact, it was so bad that as I stretched before I even started hiking I was sweating profusely. Needless to say, the sweating never stopped!

All in all it was still a great hike.

Another fine trail at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.

The trail was partially obscured by the brush on both sides.

Early in the morning the peace and stillness of the woods is mesmerizing.

No Rain!!!!!!

“A snake knows more about what is happening around than any other creature, because it has no ears to listen to gossip only direct perception. ”

Another great hike!! Even when this guy slithered across my path (I did let loose with a string of expletives!) I at least recovered long enough to get a picture.

Blue Skies And Spring

Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity.”

-John Muir

With summer rapidly approaching and daylight extending way past what we were seeing just a couple of months ago, the best way to end a day to head to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. With clear blue skies and empty trails, this hike was as close to perfect as you can get.

The Perfect Start To The Weekend

“It was a very good end to the week.”

-Craig Trychel

Since I used the very few pictures I took of my hike today in other posts, I will recycle an old photo from the entrance of Ward Pound reservation. It’s the end of the week and I couldn’t think of anything better to do to start the weekend. A peaceful and beautiful four miles!

Back To The Brown Trail!!!

On a hike, the days pass with the wind, the sun, the stars; movement is powered by a belly full of food and water, not a noxious tankful of fossil fuels. On a hike, you’re less a job title and more a human being. A periodic hike not only stretches the limbs but also reminds us: Wow, there’s a big old world out there.”

-Ken Ilgunas

Hiking and happiness go hand in hand or foot in boot.”

-Diane Spicer

For the first time in about nine months I returned to the Brown Trail at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. Although it was around 75 degrees, the canopy of the spring trees provided enough cover to keep things cool.

Early, Early Morning

“Enjoyment of the landscape is a thrill.”

-David Hockney

If this weather could go on for just a little bit longer that would be great. However, I am certain we will be punished soon enough with humid days and temperatures in the 90’s. With that said, this morning proved to be nice and cool, allowing me to get in a six mile hike through Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.
