Today was the first hike of the summer break!!! I am going to keep the distance short today and tomorrow since I will be out backpacking Wednesday, Thursday and Friday on the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail. Twenty three miles of fun on the trail!
With that said, this morning it was pretty humid and you could tell that the thunderstorms that rolled through last night had dumped a ton of rain on the trails.
Even with the humidity it was still nice to get out and get a hike in. I’m looking forward to our trip to Harriman!
Here are some photos from this mornings hike:

A stretch of the Leatherman’s Loop that was especially beautiful today.

A stream that runs underneath the trail.

Same stream as above.

A connector trail just before the Red Trail.

“I felt like lying down by the side of the trail and remembering it all. The woods do that to you…”
-Jack Kerouac
Although it wasn’t sunny out, the temperature and humidity today were much lower than on Saturday. Starting at almost the same time, the improved weather made the hiking much easier on the mind as well as the body. As always, it was a great hike and an awesome way to start the day!

WOW!!!! Today was the most humid day for hiking that I have encountered so far this year. At 5:20 am the temperature was already 66 degrees and the humidity was sky high. The forecast tonight is for thunderstorms so I guess the high humidity just comes with the territory! As a matter of fact, it was so bad that as I stretched before I even started hiking I was sweating profusely. Needless to say, the sweating never stopped!
All in all it was still a great hike.

Another fine trail at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.

The trail was partially obscured by the brush on both sides.

Early in the morning the peace and stillness of the woods is mesmerizing.

Since I used the very few pictures I took of my hike today in other posts, I will recycle an old photo from the entrance of Ward Pound reservation. It’s the end of the week and I couldn’t think of anything better to do to start the weekend. A peaceful and beautiful four miles!

One way in….One way out…

“On a hike, the days pass with the wind, the sun, the stars; movement is powered by a belly full of food and water, not a noxious tankful of fossil fuels. On a hike, you’re less a job title and more a human being. A periodic hike not only stretches the limbs but also reminds us: Wow, there’s a big old world out there.”
“Hiking and happiness go hand in hand or foot in boot.”
-Diane Spicer
For the first time in about nine months I returned to the Brown Trail at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. Although it was around 75 degrees, the canopy of the spring trees provided enough cover to keep things cool.
