Back To The Brown Trail!!!

On a hike, the days pass with the wind, the sun, the stars; movement is powered by a belly full of food and water, not a noxious tankful of fossil fuels. On a hike, you’re less a job title and more a human being. A periodic hike not only stretches the limbs but also reminds us: Wow, there’s a big old world out there.”

Hiking and happiness go hand in hand or foot in boot.”

For the first time in about nine months I returned to the Brown Trail at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. Although it was around 75 degrees, the canopy of the spring trees provided enough cover to keep things cool.

It’s May!

The month of May is the pleasant time; its face is beautiful; the blackbird sings his full song, the living wood is his holding, the cuckoos are singing and ever singing; there is a welcome before the brightness of the summer.”

Another perfect day for a spring hike! 68 degrees and a nice breeze kept the bugs away and the six miles went by really quick. It’s a shame every day couldn’t be like this.

The Best Day…So Far

Monday April 23rd was probably the best day weather wise that we have had this year. With a temperature of around 60 with absolutely no humidity, a strong breeze and clear blue skies, it felt really good to be back out on the trail.

Frigid

Every day that passes spring should be in the air,

Where is it you ask, this really isn’t fair.

The air is still frigid with snow in the sky,

It will be here shortly you say with a sigh.

Yet another day slips past and you still hope it comes soon,

But by the way that it looks it won’t be until June!

It’s Way Past Time

The date has passed, the calendar says that it’s here,

Spring has sprung and you have nothing to fear.

But as I look at the ground still covered in white,

I think to myself, “well this can’t be right.”

So I feel the air and look to the sky,

Could they be wrong? Could they have lied?

I want to be out, out on the trail,

Where the grass is greener, even at the pace of a snail.

Step after step, I walk on the ground,

My footsteps advancing, the only fair sound.

But instead here I sit, and the trail grows old,

It will soon be warm, or so I’ve been told.

As I was waiting to leave my daughters hockey tournament on Sunday I decided to check the weather. At 7:00 pm it said a 30% of snow for Wednesday. I wake up this morning and it is now been further updated from basically nothing to now 12-16 inches! As each day has passed, the amount has kept increasing.

Although I absolutely love the winter months, it is time for Old Man Winter to retreat back to wherever it is that he comes from and let Spring take the lead.

I mean really-this is the fourth nor’easter in the last three weeks and it is getting old! It is the first day of spring!!!!!

WE NEED TO BE HIKING!!!!

A New Year?

The end of the year is just two days away,

It’s soon to be history I’m happy to say.

A year full of ups and a year full of downs,

With many more smiles than awfully sad frowns.

At work or at home, the time has gone fast,

But with January upon us, it most certainly won’t last.

The time will slow to a horrible crawl

Waiting for spring and its inevitable call.

So wherever you stand with regards to the new year,

It’s going to happen, don’t have any fear!

This was what a tree outside the middle school in our district had to offer this morning.
