About Freedom Hiker

I served in the USMC directly out of high school and then taught for two years in the Bronx, NY. I was then a Special Education Coordinator/Special Education teacher at a public high school in the Lower Hudson Valley in Westchester County, New York, for over 20 years. Although I love going to Anthony's Nose, I try to get to different spots in the area. One great thing about living in the Hudson Valley is the abundance of great hikes. You can do the same hike in different seasons, and it will be as if you were hiking that trail for the first time. It doesn't get much better than that!

Re-Think Your Openmindedness

“Open minded people do not impose their beliefs on others. They accept all of life’s perspectives and realities, doing their own thing in peace.”

-Unknown

Here is an excellent definition of what it means to be open minded:

1. having or showing a mind receptive to new ideas or arguments.
2. unprejudiced; unbigoted; impartial.

Unfortunately we have segments of our population who are of the mindset that if you do not agree with what they believe or accept everything they say as gospel, then you are at fault. You are the racist, the homophobe or the sexist. These same people claim to be the ones with the “open mind”, the people who are accepting of everyone. Everyone that is unless you disagree with them.

Don’t be frightened by those who yell and scream at you because you don’t necessarily believe what they do. You are an individual, someone who has the capacity to formulate your own beliefs and opinions. Don’t let anyone take that from you.

Here is an excellent attitude to adopt for everyone:

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”

-Evelyn Beatrice Hall

My Quote Of The Day

“When life makes no sense, you must withdraw to the sanctuary within. Only in a state of peace will you see what you must do.”

-Leon Brown

My thought is when you are confronted by life, take a step back and assess the situation. Don’t automatically jump off of the bridge with everyone else. Be the person who makes the conscious and proactive decision to take the time to think before you leap.

Impress who? Not you!

“When you come to the point where you have no need to impress anybody, your freedom will begin.”

-Unknown

We all find quotes that ring true for us at one point or another in our lives. Ones that make us think and feel, ones that motivate us to make changes and as a result give us the ability to take that quote as our own. I have reached a point where the want or the need to impress anyone, especially as it relates to the colleagues at my job, is in the past.

Since I am a teacher, I only need to keep the well being of my students in mind. My job requires me to make sure that each of my students receive 100% of my focus, attention and experience every day.

Impress who? Not you!

Words To Live By…

“Listen and silent are spelled with the same letters. Think about it.”

-Unknown

It took me a few years to figure this out. Have you?? Will you??

Brilliant

Looking out the window in front of me,

What is it now that I know I see?

Brilliant sunshine, wisps of white, naked trees and river white.

The limbs reach up ever towards the blue,

Waiting for the sunset to start anew.
