The Start Of The Best Time Of The Year

Tonight marks the beginning of the best time of the year. At 2 am Sunday morning, we move the clocks ahead an hour. For those of us who cherish being outdoors, this means an extra hour of daylight to do what we love to do. While most folks bemoan the loss of an hour of sleep, I see it as an opportunity. An opportunity for adventure!

Instead of coming home every day and climbing on my stationary bike, the extra hour of light means that I’ll be able to head out to Ward Pound Ridge for a hike. If only for a few miles, being outside to witness the change from winter to spring and eventually summer is a much greater gift than you can imagine!!

My trusty companions!

With a starting temperature of 56 degrees at 7:30 this morning I made my way to Ward Pound Ridge for my first hike of the new year. With my daughters hockey schedule, weather concerns and no real daylight in the afternoon, hiking really hasn’t been a possibility. For several days now, we have known that today was going to be a warm one.

With that in mind, I knew that I had to get out!

With a new pair of boots that needed breaking in, I decided to keep the distance relatively short and the pace kind of slow. Needless to say, it was great to get out.

These three photos were taken at Ward Pound Ridge, a place where I have spent many, many hours hiking since this past summer. Located about 20 minutes from my house, it offers a multitude of hiking trails that offer a sense of peace and tranquility to either start a day or end one.

My second favorite hiking photo of the year! This was a sunset after exiting the woods in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation (late October). The contrast between the sky and the trees is what makes the photo special for me.

My second favorite photo of the year was taken after a late afternoon hike in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. It was getting dark very quickly and the temperature was somewhere in the mid 40’s. Even though it was a short hike, it was a good one.

For me, this is one of the easier Weekly Photo Challenges. Hiking in itself provides me with a high degree of serenity that can not be matched by any other activity. This is one of my favorite moments caught recently at sunset. The possibilities, not only in this post but the previous two serenity posts, are endless. The paths provided by each, both figuratively and literally, open doors for every person if you let them.

The First Hike Of December!!!!!

The first hike of December!!!! As you probably can imagine, it was pretty cold when I started my hike this morning. Not frigidly cold (as it certainly could have been), but cold enough to where I couldn’t just where shorts and a t-shirt (my favorite hiking attire). At 22 degrees, this was one of the coldest mornings that I have hiked this year. With no wind blowing, although it was chilly, it made the hiking easy.

The Sunset At Ward Pound Ridge

It was truly an odd feeling to be on the trail today and after almost always being a party to the woods waking up, I was instead for once looking at the coming night. Being pretty deep in the woods and surrounded by many hills, the darkness enveloped me much quicker than the morning light does as the sun rises. As I exited the woods in almost total darkness, I was able to catch the last of the sunset off in the distance.
